ITANAGAR, Oct 31: Renowned mountaineer and Everester Taka Tamut has been appointed as the Director of the Arunachal Pradesh Chapter of the National Adventure Foundation (NAF) — a prestigious position under the chairmanship of General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd.), the 25th Governor of Mizoram, and the presidency of Lt Gen Raman Dhawan (Retd.).
Tamut’s nomination marks a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh, highlighting both his extraordinary achievements in adventure sports and the state’s growing influence in India’s mountaineering and outdoor leadership arena.
A recipient of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, Taka Tamut is best known for his historic 2018 ascent of Mount Everest without Sherpa assistance, a rare accomplishment that reflects unmatched endurance and technical mastery. Over the years, he has successfully scaled several Himalayan peaks, earning national admiration for his grit, discipline, and self-reliance.
His service extends beyond summits—Tamut also played a crucial role in rescue missions, notably the retrieval operation following the AN-32 aircraft crash in Arunachal Pradesh, for which he received commendations from both civilian and defense authorities.
The National Adventure Foundation, under the dynamic leadership of Gen (Dr) V.K. Singh and Lt Gen Raman Dhawan, has been instrumental in fostering youth participation in adventure activities and leadership programs across India. With Tamut leading the Arunachal Chapter, the Foundation aims to expand its reach across the Northeast, promoting grassroots engagement and encouraging tribal and rural youth to embrace mountaineering, trekking, and other adventure disciplines.
Taka Tamut’s appointment is widely viewed as a recognition of his lifelong dedication to adventure and his contribution to placing Arunachal Pradesh on India’s adventure map. His leadership is expected to inspire a new generation of explorers, strengthen training and safety standards, and promote the state as a hub for high-altitude expeditions and adventure tourism.
“This nomination is not just a personal milestone but a commitment to nurture young talent and showcase Arunachal’s immense potential in adventure sports,” Tamut said after the announcement.
