ITANAGAR, Sep 20: Indian Medical Association-Arunachal unit has welcomed the Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill 2020 passed by the Central government in Rajya Sabha on Saturday.
Welcoming the Bill, President, IMA Arunachal unit Dr. Lobsang Tsetim termed it as “a good initiative to encourage and protect the healthcare workers especially during the pandemic.” “Although the Act was already in existence, the amendment which has introduced more stringent provisions will definitely boost the morale of healthcare workers,” Dr Lobsang added. The central body of the IMA and other authorities had continuously pressed for the amendments and we are thankful to them for the changes, he said.
Elaborating on the necessity of the Bill, the IMA Arunachal President observed that patient parties on several occasions had indulged in assault of on-duty Covid healthcare workers and damage of properties of hospitals which is unacceptable. “Healthcare workers are risking their lives helping the people during the pandemic and they deserve better treatment,” he said, thanking the Central government for clearing the Bill.
As per the amended Bill, anyone found guilty of acts of violence against healthcare personnel will be liable for punishment with an imprisonment of three months to five years and with a fine of Rs 50,000 to Rs 2,00,000.
