ITANAGAR, Feb 18 : A one day workshop titled ‘Citizens  and Election  in Arunachal  Pradesh’ was conducted by the Department  of Political  Science, Rajiv  Gandhi  University in collaboration with the office of the  state  Chief  Electoral Officer.
The workshop started with an observation of one minute silence to pay homage to the martyrs killed during the Pulwama attack in Jammu.
Chief Electoral Officer, Arunachal Pradesh Kaling Tayeng  highlighting the challenges of conducting election in the state  said that “spending crores of money during election time by the contesting candidates is one major challenge.” He also spoke on how linking of Aadhar card with Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) shall reduce violence during election. The CEO’s office shall also install recording devices to record the electioneering process for smooth conduct of election in the ensuing Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, he added.
Vice-Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University Professor Saket Khuswaha, said that all voters should vote on ethical lines considering the values of democracy. He also appreciated the department of Political Science and CEO’s office for organising the workshop.
Professor Nani Bath from department of Political Science, RGU delivering the keynote address highlighted various flaws such as flow of money culture, non-transparent disclosure of assets by the candidates etc that hinder the conduct of free and fair election.To overcome this problem, he suggested for creating awareness among the voters through literary clubs in tandem with youths and students.
Programme Coordinator  Dr David Gao,  highlighted on the necessity of organizing such programmes and categorically said that voters in Arunachal Pradesh have to vote keeping in view the democratic ideals.
State Nodal Officer, SVEEP, Arunachal Pradesh Lod Takkar also stressed on the importance of having electoral literary clubs in schools, colleges and universities which to a large extend promote voters’ awareness.
State Nodal Officer, Electronic Voting Machine Lijum Ete  also made a presentation on EVMS where the students, scholars and the faculty were made to vote with the new voting technology. The ‘Baseline Survey Report’ prepared by Department of Political Science, RGU was also officially released during the programme. RGU Cell
