ITANAGAR, Feb 5: The Environment and Forest Minister Nabam Rebia has expressed his concern over the degrading quality of education in the state. He was speaking during REILA (Recreation, Entertainment, Information & Literary Activities), the annual college week celebration of Rajiv Gandhi Govt Polytechnic (RGGP) here today when he blamed the teaching community for it.
“Some of our own local teachers are mostly found absent from school and engaged in their personal work. This directly affects the quality of education. When we raise this issue the local teachers express displeasure but truth is bitter,” said the minister. He also stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu Arunachal Pradesh is dreaming to emerge as a developed state. However, unless everyone extends support the dream will not be fulfilled, he added and urged the people of state, especially the younger generation to shoulder the responsibility of developing Arunachal Pradesh. Further Rebia also added that RGGP has potential to be converted into degree engineering college and assured to speak to Chief Minister in this regard.
The director of higher and technical education Dr Tayek Talom speaking on the occasion informed that Arunachal Pradesh will soon get two government engineering colleges which will further improve standard of technical education in the state. “The work at Toru government engineering college under Papum Pare district is going on in full swing. To add to it the foundation for another engineering college at Tezu under Lohit district has also been recently laid. Once completed, these two colleges will improve the quality of technical education in the state,” said Dr Talom. He also termed RGGP as one of the pioneering polytechnic institute of the state. Earlier the principal of RGGP Dr AK Tripathy dwelt at length about the history of the institute and highlighted its achievements.
The general secretary of Rajiv Gandhi Govt Polytechnic Students Union Talo Hiri submitted a memorandum to the minister highlighting the various issues confronting the institute. The main demands of students union are repairing and maintenance of boundary wall to reduce land encroachment, upgradation of RGGP to Degree College, construction of indoor stadium, basketball court and gallery. The general secretary informed that college is facing constant threat from land encroachers and sought the assistance of state government in this regard. The students proctor Ayem Pertin Taba also spoke on the occasion.
