ITANAGAR, Jul 12:The Election Commission on Wednesday cancelled the bye-election to the Pakke-Kessang Assembly constituency, taking into consideration the current weather conditions in the state. The election was scheduled for July 29.

The Pakke-Kessang seat had fallen vacant after former deputy chief minister and the then sitting MLA Kameng Dolo lost his Assembly membership following a Supreme Court ruling. While the Bharatiya Janata Party had named its local unit General Secretary BR Waghe asits candidate for the polls, the Congress and the People’s Party of Arunachal are yet to field a candidate.

The weather department has predicted more rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh in the coming days.

APCC says ECI being misled by state govt

ITANAGAR, Jul 12: After sudden cancellation of the bye-election of 12th Pakke-Kessang, the Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today slammed the ruling BJP government for misleading the ECI on pretext of inclement weather in the state.

Addressing reporters at press club today, President APCC Takam Sanjay asserted that ruling BJP government through acting Chief Secretary if the state is misguiding the ECI to cancel the schedule By-election at the last hour.

‘As per the norms it is the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state who would recommend for postpone or cancellation of any election in the state that too after proper discussion with all political parties of the state. But here, the government is interfering and misusing its power in the election process as they knew that their BJP candidates would not stand a chance against the Congress candidates,’ Sanjay said.

Claiming that the letter appealing the ECI  by CS (In-charge) was sent on July 11 last stating inclement weather in the state as the main cause, he said ‘Whereas, flood, landslides and other natural calamities have been occurring only in certain pockets of the state but not in the concern assembly constituency.’

Notification was already issued on July 5 last and the last date for nomination was July 12, interestingly order for cancellation of election was also issued on the same day, which shows something fishy  and we urge the ECI to relook at its order, said Sanjay .

While, taking strong exception on the misuse of power by Chief Secretary (In-charge) Satya Gopal, APCC demanded his immediate release from office within next 48 hours as he has been already transferred from the state on May 29 last, failing which the APCC has threatened to call a 24 hour bandh.
