ITANAGAR, Oct 26: Naharlagun police arrested one Habijul Ali and Ekramul involved in bike theft and recovered eight two-wheelers from their possession at Dikrong check gate on Tuesday.
SP, ICR Jimmy Chiram informed that during the surprise motor vehicle checks in and around the Capital Complex, the duo miscreants, Habijul Ali and Ekramul tried to flee the Nakah at Dikrong check gate and after much effort they were arrested. Both accused are from Lakhimpur district, Assam who later admitted to their crime.
“During the course of the investigation, it came to light that the duo are habitual offenders with around 10 cases of vehicle theft registered against them at Naharlagun, Laluk and Bihpuria police station,” he said.
Chiram also informed that both the accused had met at July jail and decided to commit theft together once they got out. After getting out of jail, Habijul came to Naharlagun and met Ekramul and they stole around eight motorcycles together from the Itanagar capital region.
Talking about the modus operandi, Chiram said that after stealing the bikes from ICR the lifters would WhatsApp the bike’s engine and chassis number to their contacts at Bangalmara to create fake registration certificates. Then, with the help of the fake RCs, the miscreants smuggled the stolen vehicles to Assam and sold it to one Eliyash Uddin @ Eli Ali of Bangalmara for Rs 10,000 to 15,000.
