YUPIA/HOJ, Oct 21: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a young driver early Monday morning after his car plunged into a river near Hoj Road in Papum Pare district, police said.
According to Papum Pare SDPO Radhe Obing, the incident was reported around 7 a.m., prompting police and local residents to immediately launch a search and rescue operation. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle sank instantly after falling into the river, making recovery efforts extremely challenging.
Despite the strong current, villagers and rescuers managed to retrieve both the car — a Nissan Micra — and the driver’s body after prolonged effort. The deceased was identified as Amir Hussain (25), from Saranga Village, Noibosa, North Lakhimpur district (Assam). He was employed as a driver for a local resident of the Hoj area.
SDPO Obing appreciated the quick response and cooperation of local villagers, whose assistance proved crucial in recovery effort.
The family of the deceased was informed, and after completion of legal formalities, the body was handed over to them for the last rites.
While the exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, police have registered a case at Doimukh Police Station and initiated an investigation, added the SDPO.
