ITANAGAR, Mar 13: A special screening session of ‘I Am Property’, a documentary film that deals with the issues of impunity and polygyny in the context of customary laws in Arunachal Pradesh was held today here at the N.E Hall.
Secretary, Disaster Management & Transport Dani Salu, Director Women & Child Development T.P. Loyi, Chairperson, Arunachal State Commission for Women Radhilu Chai, professors from Arunachal Institute of Tribal Studies & Department of Anthropology of RGU were present at the screening event.
The film sheds light on the different communities of the state where the practice of polygyny is dominantly prevalent. It also explores the experiences of both men and women who exist and participate in the common practice of polygyny by making a statement that although a woman is the breadwinner and nurturer of the land, she does not have any rights to own it.
“The film took a lot of twists and turns from the very beginning of the project. The making of the film is actually a journey of myself. It is my journey to understand as to why the impunity of women in the context of customary laws in Arunachal Pradesh is practiced and this film is the result of the quest,”  the documentary’s director Karry Padu said.
