NAHARLAGUN, Jun 28: Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF-2019) was launched today in Arunachal Pradesh solemnized by the Director Family Welfare cum SPO RMNCHA, NHM Dr. Allok Yirang here at NHM Training Hall in presence of all the officers and officials of the Department of Family Welfare and State Health Mission.
Appreciating the support provided by the state government for observance of IDCF-2019 from June 28 to July 11 next, Yirang informed that the programme would benefit and protect 1,74,914 under-five children of the state from severe forms of diarrhoea. All the goals of IDCF-2019 would be achieved by free distribution of two ORS Sachet and 14 Zinc tablets for each child all across the state through a network of 3887 ASHAs and 972 ANMs.
It can be recalled that state launching of IDCF-2019 was preceded by State level Review cum Orientation Workshop for all DRCHOs on June 15 and State Steering Committee Meeting on implementation of IDCF-2019 on June 21 last.
During June 15 workshop, while reiterating the state’s mission to attain “Zero Diarrhoeal Deaths among Under Five Children” Yirang had expressed his satisfaction on free ORS and Zinc Tablet distribution coverage rate of 94.9% among under five children in the state in 2018-19 but was critical of the deaths of 6 under five children due to diarrhoea and exhorted the district officers to ensure that there are zero cases in 2019-20.
Speaking on Child Death Review (CDR), Dr Yirang also expressed his unhappiness on the inability on part of district health officers to implement CDR in the state in spite of repeated reminders and orientation trainings given.
He further reminded that Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) of Arunachal has risen to 46 as per SRS-2017, which is one of the highest in the country. Nodal Officer Child Health Dr Tana Natung, who was also the resource person for the workshop, enumerated the details of roles and responsibilities of the ASHAs and ANMs upon which success of IDCF-2019 would depend to a large extent.
State IDCF Steering Committee Meeting on June 21 appreciated Lohit district for achieving the target of 100 % coverage of free ORS to under-five children followed by Papum Pare, East Siang, Upper Siang, East & West Kameng, Dibang Valley, Kurung Kumey and Longding with 99% and Lower Siang, Changlang and Tawang for achieving 98%. It was also unanimously agreed that it is only through greater convergence of all stake-holder departments and NGOs in creating awareness on preventive measures of diarrhoea at community level, the goal of “Zero Diarrhoeal Deaths among Under Five Children” in the state can be achieved.
