CHOWKHAM, Dec 19: Participating in the first ever Paa-Saa making competition today here at a private resort, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein while calling upon the District Administrations to ban illegal fishing, appealed to the CBOs to come forward in protecting and preserving the state’s rich flora and fauna.
Speaking about the tourism potential of the state in general and of Namsai and adjacent districts in particular, Mein asserted that with religious sites like Golden Pagoda, Parashuramkund and Malinithan, snow clad mountains, evergreen tropical rain forests and tiger reserves, Namsai/Tengapani-Parashuramkund-Anjaw/Mayudia-Roing/Dambuk-Anini in the eastern sector can emerge as attractive tourist destinations. He also informed that works for developing the Glaw Lake into a tourist destination will start soon and completed within 2 years. Expressing delight on the coming up of many eco-tourism resorts in the district which are generating employment for local youths, the DCM informed that a heritage site will be developed in Tengapani where the Golden Pagoda is located to facilitate the locals to sale handlooms and handicrafts besides promoting elephant and boat rides. Golden Pagoda is a great attraction for tourists with annual footfalls of around 2 lakh.
Terming the preparation of Paa-Saa as a kind of art, which is one of the most sought-after traditional dishes of the Tai Khamti community, Mein underscored the need of preserving traditional cuisines and lauded the organizers for the unique competition. He also released a Tai Khamti music video album titled ‘Sao Haak’ and gave away prizes to the winners of the competition. Among others, MLA Namsai Chau Zingnu Namchoom, MLA Lekang Jummum Ete Deori and former MLA Nang Sati Mein were present on the occasion.
