ITANAGAR, May 11: Hundreds of voters from 38-Rakso polling station under 18-Palin Assembly Constituency staged a dharna in front of Nirvachan Bhawan demanding immediate re-poll in the said polling station.
Holding placards and banners, voters under the umbrella of ‘Deprived Voters of Rakso Polling Station’ served a seven-day ultimatum to the election authorities to declare fresh poll in 38-Rakso polling station.
Speaking to reporters, Chairman of the forum, Biri Nainia said that after disturbing the democratic process on the poll day of April 11 last , the supporters of Janata Dal-United candidate again disrupted the April 27 re-poll by preventing genuine voters of the said polling station from exercising their franchises. “ As per record, more than 160 voters were restricted to enter the polling booth and cast vote on the re-polling day of April 27, with administration and police standing as mute spectators, ” claimed Nainia.
Further, he also informed that the deprived voters in a joint memorandum submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has demanded disqualification of the JD-U candidate and re-poll within seven days under vigilance of the Chief Observer.
While clarifying on the allegation of postal votes, Nainia categorically refuted the allegation of JD-U candidate terming it false and baseless. “Most of the voters are villagers and as they stay in the concerned villages, the necessity of postal ballots to cast vote does not arise,” added the chairman of the forum.
A Gaon Burah who was also attending the dharna informed that even he, despite being the GB was not allowed to vote . ‘The JD (U) workers used catapults, stones and sophisticated weapons to disrupt the voting process on the day and when we informed about the happenings to the security personnel, they did not take any action against them,” the GB added.
