PASIGHAT, Dec 28: A Drug De-addiction Centre was formally inaugurated today here at Jarkong by the local MLA Kaling Moyong in presence of a host of government officials with the clarion call to make Arunachal a drug-free state.
DHS Dr. Moromor Lego, DMO Dr. Kaling Dai, DC In-charge Tatdo Borang, SP Rajiv Ranjan Singh and PD (APSACS) cum State Nodal Officer De-addiction Cell Dr. Riken Rina were present on the occasion.
Moyong appealed everyone especially the youths to say “No to Drugs” and other substances that are detrimental to health. Responding to a request by one of the former addicts, the MLA assured to appeal his colleagues to provide alternative means to those who grow opium, bhang etc in the state and advised the students to be diligent in studies to achieve success in competitive exams.
DC In-charge spoke about various social evils related to substance abuse and urged the youths to refrain from drugs and alcohol.
DHS while expressing concern about the growing menace of drugs in state, appealed the youths to keep distance from the menace. DMO while mentioning the constraints in functionalizing of the centre, expressed hope that with a 10-bedded capacity and trained team of officers and staff, it will cater to the needs of the people affected by substance abuse and addiction since drug menace is a major public health problem in East Siang district.
Dr. Rina highlighted the current status of drug menace in Arunachal Pradesh and enumerated the efforts of the Health Department in providing treatment and rehabilitation. Omily Borang, the founder of Mureng, which is a youth creativity-based organization spoke on the occasion. Two former addicts shared their nightmarish experience of drug abuse and appealed the youths never to touch such things.
DD (ICDS) PE Angu, officers and staff of DDC, members of WASE, public leaders and students were also present. Relevant pamphlets and hand-outs were distributed on the occasion. DIPRO
