AALO, Nov 23:  In a bid to check the growing menace of drug abuse in West Siang district, Deputy Commissioner Penga Tato today held a meeting with all stakeholders of the district. Referring to the Arunachal government’s directive to government employees to come clean on drug addiction if any and to seek rehabilitation, he urged all departments to locate such addicts in their respective departments.
The fight against drug menace should be a coordinated effort and drug peddlers in the district need to be dealt with iron hand to stem the source, Tato said, asking the police to register cases against drug related cases instantly.
 The ADC Liyi Bagra stressed on exemplary punishment as per NDPS Act to abusers and traffickers, awareness camps with fund drives, parental roles and societal efforts to control the menace. Today the cases of crimes have gone down due to convictions of offenders by the courts and the trend needs intensification, he said.
Participating in the discussion, Superintendent of Police Raja Banthia said that administration and police alone cannot solve the issue unless civil society as a whole comes forward to fight the menace. Stating that informants' names will be kept secret while filing the FIR, the SP also stressed on identifying the timings and locations where such nuisances take place in order to step up surveillance.
Among others Director De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre, Kennedy Bagra spoke at length on their 12 long years of association with drug problems in the district highlighting on approaches with addicts, proper parenting, social awareness, statistics of derailed boys and girls. He disclosed that more than 50 chronic drug addicts from Rehabilitation centre have recovered and are leading normal lives.
