Ziro, Apr 25: Deputy Commissioner, Lower Subansiri District Vivek HP, distributed Test Reports of the Gastric (Stomach) Cancer Epidemiology & Risk Study done on 203 volunteers at Gyati Takka General Hospital, Ziro. The screening was done from March 5 to 8 earlier this year, in a move aimed at understanding and preventing gastric cancer among the people of Ziro Valley. 
The DC expressed his concerns over excessive consumption of carbonated drinks like Coke, Pepsi etc. by the children and youth of Ziro. He also cautioned the people about decreasing population of certain clans of Apatani tribe and exhorted the participants to take care of their dietary habits and asked them to encourage their family members and friends to come forward and assist the screening team in their endeavours. 
Dr. B.B. Borthakur, Director, BBCI, Guwahati gave brief highlights of the cancer screening test reports. He said, out of 203 participants, 51 are in High Risk Category, 70 are in Moderate Risk Category and 82 are in Nominal Risk Category for developing stomach cancer. He further told that there are multiple factors causing stomach cancer, so requested the participants to voluntarily assist them for few years, so that his team can assess their conditions, monitor their diets and bring forth timely interventions for prevention of onset of gastric cancer. 
The ongoing gastric cancer screening program is a collaboration between Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute(BBCI), Guwahati, The State Cancer Society of Arunachal Pradesh, Naharlagun and Gyati Takka General Hospital, Ziro with support from the District Administration of Lower Subansiri and the Community Advisory Board of Ziro. Dr. Koj Jarbo, Medical Superintendent of GTGH, Ziro, other doctors, medical staff and hundreds of participants also attended the test reports distribution program.
