Yingkiong, Jan 24: A meeting was convened today by the Deputy Commissioner, Upper Siang District,  Shashvat Saurabh, in connection with the practice of community hunting during the forthcoming Aran festival in Upper Siang.
The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the rich biodiversity of the district and stressed on the need to stop the indiscriminate and unabated practice of hunting in the name of tradition and culture and requested the people to protect and conserve wildlife of the area for posterity.
An elaborate audio-visual presentation was made by him to bring home the message to the public. He also cautioned the people of the various penal provisions under the Wildlife Protection Act and to give up on gun culture.
The SP, Upper Siang spoke on the need to regulate the arms and ammunitions in the district and to do away with those not needed from a security perspective as most of these weapons were being used for hunting purposes.
The DFO (Wildlife) highlighted the rich biodiversity of the area and how wildlife was making a comeback especially in the Karko area of Jengging sub-division since people have given up hunting. Various penal provisions against hunting were made aware to the people. DIPRO
