ITANAGAR, Sep 26: The North East Human Rights Organization (NEHRO) has raised its voice for the people of Jarku village in Pasighat who have been facing acute problems due to mishandling of solid waste by Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC) at the vicinity of their habitation affecting normal life and health.
In a letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of East Siang district today, NEHRO has pointed out that the current method followed by PMC while dealing with solid waste which is burning of trashes is resulting in pollution of the surroundings as well as environment and is a violation of the Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM)-2016. According to these rules, it is mandatory thata disposal site/landfill should be at a distance of around 500 meters from human habitation, 20 km away from airport/airbase and 100 meters from river. But there is no mechanism for segregating the waste and dumping is continuing unabated in open environment and the present location of landfill/disposal site is located at public place near Pasighat crematorium ground which is a flood prone zone near Siang river, the letter said. The representation has also reminded that these discrepancies have been continuing despite appeals from the affected local people but the concerned authority is showing a lackadaisical attitude.
Reiterating that unscientific method of dumping solid waste in the above habitation area is a grave violation of SWM-2016, Article 21, 48, 51A(g) of the Constitution of India andSection 2(e) of Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act 1974, NEHRO has requested the DC to issue necessary order to stop further dumping in the crematorium ground and take appropriate action against the concerned authority. Failure to address the issue will compel them to knock the doors of National Green Tribunal, the letter also added. NEHRO PR
