ITANAGAR, Jan 13: At least 23,505 recipients will be vaccinated with Covishield, the COVID vaccine developed by Serum Institute of India in the first phase in the state.
This was informed by State Nodal Officer (SNO)-Immunization Dr. D Padung. The SNO said the state is fully geared up for the COVID vaccination challenge and preparations ranging from dry runs to training of staff have already been completed. It can be recalled that mock dry runs were conducted on January 2 and 5 in the state. The Government of India has approved two vaccines Covishield and Covaxin that will be available as of now.
However, as one state can have only one approved vaccine, Arunachal Pradesh will use the Covishield version, Dr Padung informed, adding that the consignment will arrive on Thursday at 9 am in Guwahati for which a team of medical experts from the state is already there to collect it. “We are expecting that by 5 pm the vaccine will arrive in the state capital and within 2/3 hours the consignments will be dispatched to every district,” he informed.
As per central government directives, vaccines will be delivered phase-wise and first priority will be given to the healthcare workers along with ASHAs, Anganwadi workers and CDPOs. “As of now, we have the list of at least 23,505 persons to be vaccinated. 60% will be delivered in the first phase and rest 40 % will be delivered soon,” Dr Padung said while informing that the vaccination process will cover every citizen in a phase-wise manner. He further elaborated that vaccines will not be given to persons below 18 years of age, pregnant women as no trials have been done on such categories. The vaccine which will come in dual doses will also not be provided to those who are known to be allergic to any kind of vaccines.
The vaccine is very safe, effective and no major side-effects have been reported till date and moreover, the same vaccine is being used by multiple countries, Dr. Padung assured.
