ITANAGAR, Aug 3: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested a militant of the NSCN (Unification) group and claimed to have foiled the banned outfit's plan to kill a "renowned" person here.
The arrested cadre has been identified as Wangchin Wangpan, who the police suspect is a close aide of the self-styled chairman of NSCN (U), Arunachal unit Loliam Latey who was arrested recently and now in capital police custody.
The arrest was made by a police team comprising of Inspector N Lali, K Tao and A Tayeng under the active direction of SP (SIT) Navdeep Singh Brar from Lekhi area.
The SP said that the outfit had hatched a conspiracy to abduct, extort and kill a "renowned" person.
He, however, declined to identify the target person due to security reasons.
"One hand grenade, 13 numbers of live ammunition of various calibers, a mobile handset, a voter ID card and a Dimapur bound bus ticket was recovered from the militant's possession," Brar said.
Addressing media persons here at Police headquarters on Saturday, Brar said following interrogation it was revealed that at the direction of NSCN (U) chairman, Wangpan came here to execute abduction or extortion activities in the Naharlagun area.
SP also informed that earlier Wangpan was arrested in connection with a kidnapping case at Khonsa and was convicted to 3 years imprisonment in another extortion case registered at Deomali in the year 2015.
When questioned whether the cadre was summoned here to the state capital to obstruct Independence Day celebration, the SP refuted any possible terror angle.
“Effort is on to arrest the person who is providing logistic support to Wangpan,” informed SP adding that Call Detail Records is being investigated by the department. He divulged that initial examination of call logs and locations of Wangpan's handset indicates his link to NSCN (U).
The SP said that a case was booked under the Arms Act and an investigation to nab other accused has been launched.
On the sidelines, when asked about the progress of case related to Ojing Tayeng murder, PRC issue, and Tirong Aboh assassination, Brar informed that all the cases are in progress and many suspects have been arrested in connection with the cases.
“Investigation is underway and we can’t disclose every detail as of now due to protocol,” he said while adding that the SIT is not involved in the case of Tirong Aboh as the case has been taken up by the NIA.
