Naharlagun, Jan 30: With the objective of spreading consumer awareness among the citizens the department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Affairs organized a one-day programme on consumer protection titled “Be a Smart Shopper” at a city hotel here on Tuesday.
Representatives from various NGO/VCOs as well as from government enforcement agencies took part in the programme.
In-charge Controller, Legal Metrology & CA, Daro Marbom, DCLM appealed the participants to take benefit from the programme so as to disseminate the knowledge to people in their respective areas of working towards protection of common consumers.
Attending as resource person, Senior Food Safety Officer, Dogendra Boishnab highlighted on various provisions of Food Safety and Standard Act and brought to reference the mandatory BIS certification on food items that relates to baby food, packaged drinking water and salt. He also clarified the doubts raised by the participants on difference of blended edible oil and mustard oil. Narrating activities of the department for the cause of the consumer in the state, he also cited few case histories in which legal actions were initiated against the violators of the provisions of FSS Act.
Sequel to the deliberation on food safety by Senior FSO, K. P. Tago, ACLM gave practical demonstration on food adulteration with simple tests. He urged participants to be careful while buying products of day to day use particularly food items. He also demonstrated on possibilities of short delivery of commodities by manipulating the weighing and measuring instruments.
ACLM Papum Pare District Amrit Taba, spoke at length on consumer redressal machineries set up under Consumer Protection Act, 1986 and also narrated some interesting past cases of the state and at national level. He highlighted on the procedure and types of cases that can be lodged to consumer fora. While making clear the fact that unless there arises a dispute between a buyer and a seller there can be no case, he suggested the consumers to approach the seller for redressal before filing the complaint to forum.
