PASIGHAT, Jul 1: With the intention of making an on-ground assessment of the current flood situation due to the rise of Siang water level, the Mebo Block office bearers of the Indian National Congress (INC) on Wednesday visited the flood-affected villages of Sigar and Namsing.
The team was led by INC Mebo Block President Karo Tayeng and accompanied by senior party members like Bomken Tayeng, Karo Moyong, Natung Tayeng and others and donated a sum of Rs 25000 each to both the villages for immediate relief works.
Earlier in the day, Secretary of INC Mebo Block Karo Moyong appealed to the party members to make contributions to the flood affected villages. Responding to the appeal, Bomken Tayeng donated a sum of Rs 50,000 to the INC Mebo relief fund and further donated Rs 10,000 to the Sigar villagers for immediate relief works. Natung Tayeng donated Rs. 2500 each to both the villages and a family from Namsing village comprising Group Captain(Retd.) Bansiram Pao, Vayu Sena Medal awardee Mohonto Panging (Pao) and others contributed a combined sum of Rs 1 lakh for the flood affected village.
Flood in Siang has once again taken a worse direction affecting the villages like Namsing, Sigar, Seram and Borguli under the Mebo Sub-Division here in East Siang district and over the years, thousands of acres of lands used mostly for agricultural and domestic animal grazing purposes had been lost. But despite such large scale damages including the region's wildlife habitat, D. Ering Wildlife Sanctuary, adequate attention is yet to arrive from state and central governments, the villagers said.
According to a recent observation by a local NGO named 'SEEANG' which was formed with an objective to save the flood-hit villages of Lower Mebo from the wrath of mighty Siang, required attention has so far remained elusive, even if the central and state governments usually sanction fund amounting to Rs 100 and above for smaller or lesser affected regions/areas.
It needs mentioning that the recently constructed Rs. 35 crore Siang flood protection bund funded by the DoNER out of initially budgeted Rs. 100 plus crore has failed to tame the Siang during the peak flood season.
