ITANAGAR, Jul 21: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee has once again slammed the BJP-led Central government for the unprecedented hike in prices of fuel, LPG and other essential commodities.
Speaking to reporters, APCC General Secretary Toko Mina claimed that continuous hike of prices of essential commodities by the Centre has created a situation of economic depression in Arunachal Pradesh. People are helpless and jobless, but the BJP government at the Centre keeps on increasing the taxes on essential commodities, Mina said while urging the state government to reduce VAT on essential commodities so that common people could get some respite at a time when the state is confronting unemployment, economic and health crises. “We have submitted a representation to the President of India through the Governor of the state to reduce taxes on essential commodities. During the Congress-led UPA government in 2014, per litre central excise duty on petrol was Rs 9.48 but now it has increased to Rs 32.90. Central excise duty on diesel was Rs 3.56 but now during the BJP-led Central government’s rule it is Rs 31.80 which is a huge hike. Moreover, the prices of international crude oil during the UPA regime were much higher than now,” Mina gave the details.
While appealing to the state government to at least reduce VAT to give relief to the state’s common people, she informed that state VAT on petrol is 20% and on diesel 12.5%. “Now both petrol and diesel prices are almost touching the Rs 100 mark. So to relieve the burden of the citizens, VAT should be reduced up to 10-15 %,” she reasoned.
Hitting out at the BJP-led Central government over fuel and LPG price hike, the APCC GS said that edible oil which could be purchased at Rs 80 per litre just a few months ago has now skyrocketed to Rs 250 per litre.
Such unprecedented hike in essential commodities’ prices is directly affecting the common people especially amid the Covid pandemic, Mina added.
