ITANAGAR, Jan 12: A Committee constituted by Directorate of Prisons and Correctional Administration, headed by Yomge Ado, Member Secretary, Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (APSLSA), inspected the Sub-Jail at Longding to take stock of the facilities and various other related issues such as medical attention, food, hygiene etc.
The Committee simultaneously interacted with the inmates and the jail authority about the condition and other aspects of jail inmates languishing at the facility. The inmates were also informed about the free legal aid/services which Legal Services Institution provides under National Legal Services Authority (NALSA)’s Free and competent Legal Services schemes and regulations under Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, in which every person in custody is entitled of free legal services and other facilities. It also ensures that that every prisoners are provided timely free legal aid.
Since no Legal Aid Clinic was yet established, the same is to be set up by Arunachal Pradesh SLSA early to cater to the legal needs of the inmates.
YRG Care, a non-profit NGO working to provide HIV prevention and treatment were also present along with the committee during the jail inspection.
Total of 41 inmates with 36 UTPs, 5 convicts including two women were lodged during the visit.
