Tawang, Jul 29: The Mon Autonomous Region Demand Committee which has been spearheading the demand for creation of the Mon Autonomous Region, an issue pending since 2003 on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Pema Khandu appealing the state government to expedite the long-pending demand.
Prior to submitting the memorandum, the committee convened a meeting of eminent personalities from the twin districts of Tawang and West Kameng over where the geographical area of the proposed autonomous region would spread, here at the Zomkhang Hall of Circuit Hall under the aegis of Monpa Mimang Tsogpa attended by its President Rinchin Dorjee.
MLA Lumla Jambey Tashi presented a brief chronology of events from 2003 onwards when the demand was first raised and recalled the assurances given by then Chief Minister of the state Nabam Tuki and Lok Sabha MP Takam Sanjoy in 2013 for creation of the Mon Autonomous Region.
A horde of issues pertaining to creation of the Mon Autonomous Region were discussed and the participants while expressing their views on the immediate necessity of its creation also didn’t conceal their displeasure over the inordinate delay in this regard.
While setting the target of an immediate creation of the Autonomous Region, the meeting decided to pursue the issue with zeal both with the State and Central governments.
It was decided that various committees of the Mon Autonomous Demand Committee both in Tawang and West Kameng districts would be revived and time-specific activities related to the issue would be launched. The speakers also emphasized on initiating tripartite talks with the State and Central governments for creation of the proposed Autonomous Region at the earliest. After a threadbare discussion a timeline for various activities to be conducted in the twin districts was finalized.

The demand for the Mon Autonomous Region initiated way back in 2003 is still pending with the Government of India. The State Legislative Assembly adopted and resolved for creation of the Autonomous District Council of Tawang and West Kameng along with the Autonomous District Council of Tirap and Changlang on February 16, 2004 and forwarded the same to the GoI. After a series of follow-up actions over the years, the demand, however, remains pending till date.
Besides the MLAs of Tawang and West Kameng districts, students’ union representatives, religious figures, senior officers and eminent personalities of both the districts attended the meeting maintaining Covid-19 SOPs. Mon ARDC PR
