ITANAGAR, Nov 21: On the occasion of World Fisheries Day today, Department of Fisheries, GoAP released a Coffee Table Book titled ‘Glimpses of Fisheries in Arunachal Pradesh’ through the hands of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
Minister (Fisheries) Er.Tage Taki, Secretary (Fisheries) A.R. Talwade, PCCF, Department of Environment and Forests Dr. M. Surya Prakash, Director of Fisheries Joyshil Taba, Professor. D.N. Das, Department of Zoology, Rajiv Gandhi University, Moyir Riba from the Centre for Cultural Research and Documentation and departmental officers were present on the occasion.
Chief Minister congratulated the Department on World Fisheries Day and appreciated the endeavour in bringing out the book. He also enquired about the current status of fisheries in the state, threat to fisheries & effects of introduction of exotic fishes on the indigenous fishes, ways to increase production of fish and fish seed and issues faced by the Department. He further suggested to explore marketing of locally produced fishes to Defence services which will be a ready market of the produce benefiting the farmers and assured his full support and cooperation for all-round development of the sector. Minister (Fisheries) expressed concern on destructive fishing methods and opined that proper awareness should be generated among the masses about its ill-effects.
Secretary Fisheries highlighted that involvement of cooperative societies and private entrepreneurs will boost up fish production in the state.
PCCF, Department of Environment and Forests and former Commissioner of the Department stated that the state has 259 fish species and fish being the cheapest source of protein should be encouraged for health as well as income generation.
Director of Fisheries emphasized on the importance of fish based eco-tourism and stocking of fish seeds in lakes and other open water bodies for boosting production.
