ITANAGAR, Dec 15: A delegation comprising members of the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR) and Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) today met the ten-year old girl child who was raped on December 6 in Longding and currently undergoing treatment at a Dibrugarh hospital.
Expressing deep anguish over the current physical and mental condition of the victim, the team called upon the police to expedite the investigation and file a flawless charge sheet to ensure exemplary punishment to the rapist. While providing financial assistance to the victim, the APSCPCR Chairperson Gumri Ringu said she would pursue for early release of compensation with the government as the family is not financially well-off. She further underscored the need for having a trauma centre in the state as treatment outside is costly and beyond the reach of most citizens.
Meanwhile, the medical report has confirmed rape and after interacting with the victim, the Chairperson has asked a status report from the SP, Longing. Secretary General, APWWS Kani Nada Maling while seeking exemplary punishment for the culprit said no bail should be granted for such heinous crime. She further requested the state government to provide immediate financial assistance to such traumatized victims, as their families normally are unable to meet the medical expenses.
Apart from Ringu and Maling, Commission member Tame Achum Niri Chongrowju, APWWS Law Coordinator Oyam Binggep and General Secretary, APWWS, Longding Branch Nora Atha Wangsu visited the victim and her family. Meanwhile, the Wancho Students' Union while condemning the rape has sought exemplary punishment. “This kind of activity is totally against the customary laws of the Wancho society. If it is repeated again, social insecurity will rise in the community which is most unwarranted,” WSU stated in its press statement, urging the competent authorities to take immediate action against the culprit as per applicable provisions of law.
