ITANAGAR, Sep 28: Chakat Aboh, widow of Khonsa West MLA, late Tirong Aboh has been nominated as a ‘consensus candidate’ for the ensuing bye-election to the 56 Khonsa West Assembly Constituency.
This was announced by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in a press conference held this evening here at the Civil Secretariat which was attended by State BJP President, Tapir Gao, APCC President, Nabam Tuki, National General Secretary, NPP, Mutchu Mithi, Chairman PPA, Kamen Ringu, President, JDU, Ruhi Tagung and Vice President of NPP, Nima Sangge. As a mark of respect to the slain MLA, all the five major political parties in the state have unanimously decided not to field any candidate against her.
Aboh was killed along with his 20-year-old son Loggem Aboh and party general secretary Wangngoi Hakhun along with eight others by suspected NSCN militants on May 21 at Khonsa. Aboh later won the seat posthumously when the result was declared. “After threadbare all-party meeting and extensive consultation early this morning, we had arrived at a decision to nominate the name of Chakat Aboh as a consensus candidate for Khonsa West. However, being a consensus candidate, she has to fight the bye-election as an independent candidate and no party ticket will be given to her,” Chief Minister said, adding that the decision was taken in line with the stand of the Legislative Assembly decision that Chakat Aboh will be elected without any contest in the by-poll. “This will be a real tribute to Tirong Aboh and Congress will wholeheartedly support the decision of the state government,” said the former Chief Minister, Nabam Tuki.
In his address, BJP, President, Tapir Gao said that the collective decision was taken in line with PM, Narendra Modi’s slogan “Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas” and to restore peace and system of good governance in the district. “The decision taken today is an attempt to reduce the total-fear psychosis among people following Aboh's assassination last May. To save the insurgency-hit district, we have to be united and rise above political lines,” Gao underlined.
Aboh was elected in 2014 as a People's Party of Arunachal MLA and later joined the Congress and served as a cabinet minister in the Nabam Tuki government. He was also re-elected in the recently concluded assembly polls as a National People's Party (NPP) candidate.
