ITANAGAR, Oct 23: Pursuing with the effort to discourage ecologically hazardous jhum cultivation, a three-day ‘Residential Training Programme on Scientific cultivation of Tea’, called ‘Chai Paathshaala’ being conducted by the Department of Trade and Commerce in collaboration with Tea Research Association (TRA) and Tea Board of India (TBI) commenced today here at the Dorjee Khandu State Convention Centre.
It is an initiative of the state government to encourage farmers to take up remunerative and profitable cash crops like tea instead of continuing with jhum. Minister for Trade & Commerce, Industry etc Tumke Bagra, who was the Chief Guest informed that state government has been encouraging tea cultivation and advised the Resource Persons from TRA and TBI to give awareness to the policy makers so that it could percolate to the government level. Keeping in view of the growing demand for organic tea, he stressed for giving more impetus to organic farming since it fetches higher remuneration in international markets with the aim to make Arunachal an Organic Tea State.
Secretary, Trade & Commerce, N. Tsering Glow advised the tea growers/farmers to take advantage of the training and give feedback in writing to the department so that their issues and suggestions are properly addressed.
Director of Trade & Commerce, Tokong Pertin informed that many enthusiastic and interested growers are venturing into tea cultivation in the state but couldn’t develop at the desired level due to lack of awareness and knowledge of scientific and systematic cultivation and the sole aim of Chai Paathshaala is to impart technical and scientific know-how on tea cultivation. Consultant, Advisory Service, Tea Research Association, North Bank Advisory Centre Dr. SK Baruah informed the health benefits of tea and requested the participants to garner maximum benefit from this training.
The training programme is being conducted in collaboration and technical support from Tea Board of India, Regional Office, Itanagar and Tocklai Tea Research Institute, Tea Research Association, Jorhat. With a two-day theoretical session, a field visit to nearby tea gardens on the third day is also designed for practical demonstration. Dept. of Trade & Commerce PR
