ITANAGAR, Aug 11: Following the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir, state BJP today said the central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no intention to touch Article 371, a special status given to most of the Northeastern States.
Speaking to media at the Press Club, state Vice President cum Party’s spokesperson Dominic Tadar said ‘We welcome the decision to abrogate Article 370 from Jammu & Kashmir and the creation of separate Union Territory for Ladakh.'
Responding to query on Article 371 under which most of the Northeastern states have been placed as special status, Tadar said Home Minister Amit Shah has already clarified that the government has no intention to abrogate 371 from Northeast states. 'The case of Jammu & Kashmir is totally different from the special status given to Northeastern states, both cannot be compared,' he stated.
Special Status given to the Northeastern states is based on the cultural and religious values of the tribal people as well as on geographical and economic aspects, stated Tadar while adding that Northeastern states never demanded or have a separate constitution, flag or emblem like in the case of Jammu & Kashmir. Moreover, Article 371 never questioned the integrity of the country, he added.
When asked about Article 371(H) in connection to Arunachal Pradesh that speaks only about special power to Governor and nothing about the rights on natural resources, Tadar said 'Being a tribal of the state, I feel that it can be amended and we should get rights over our land, river and jungle.'
When asked about Citizen Amendment Bill (CAB), Tadar said Central government under PM Modi will definitely respect and protect tribal sentiments of the Northeastern states.
'I am sure that the sentiments of tribal people will be not be touched. Moreover, our government has already taken its stand that we are against the CAB,' asserted Tadar.
