ITANAGAR, Dec 22: Extending support to the people of Assam and other Northeastern states in their on-going agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Assamese people  residing in Capital Complex today organized a sit-in dharna here at  Tennis Court under the banner of ‘Assamese Society of Capital Complex’.
Hundreds of people from the Assamese community and other NE states holding placards and banners participated in the day-long dharna as a mark of protest.
Speaking to the media, Co-coordinator of Assamese Society of Capital Complex, Rahul Dutta stated that Assamese community residing in Capital Complex has organized the peaceful sit-in to protest against CAA and convey  condolences to those who lost their lives during the protests in Assam and other NE states.
While divulging the resentment over CAA, he opined that Assam is losing its indigenous language, cultures, traditions and land due to the influx of outsiders. We just cannot accept any  more influx in Assam and lose our identity at a time when our people are struggling for existence in their own land, lamented Dutta.
“I am an indigenous origin person from Tripura and everybody knows our condition there. We have become a minority in our own land and lost economic as well as political power,” lamented Issac Debbarma, who was representing Tripura in the dharna. Condemning the central government for CAA, he added that due to influx of outsiders, indigenous population  have now only 20 representatives  out of 60 in  the Tripura State Assembly and  we have to learn and  speak in Bengali language sacrificing our own  indigenous languages.
Representative from NESO Pritam Sonam, President Kristi Kendra-Naharlagun Budhin Dutta, Secretary Symposium & Debate-AAPSU Marli Kamki and members from various NGOs and students’ organizations also participated in the dharna.
