ITANAGAR, Oct 4: Joining the rest of the country in condemning the Hathras rape incident and extending solidarity with the family members of the victim, hundreds of like-minded youths on Sunday assembled here at the capital’s IG Park.
Irrespective of caste, creed, religion and political affiliation, the youths organised the congregation through social media appeals to condemn the tragedy and express solidarity with the victim’s family. Addressing the gathering, social activist Ngurang Reena while extending her solidarity, slammed the inhuman act of the UP Police for cremating the body of the victim without consent of her family. Demanding resignation of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Reena stated that the law enforcing system is meant for needy people and not for those who are in power. “Whatever happened in UP is Gundaraj,” she remarked, demanding a speedy and fair investigation of the case. Meanwhile, she also reprimanded the state police department for showing lackadaisical attitude in solving the alleged murder case of her father late Ngurang Pinch. Speaking on the occasion, renowned social activist Jarjum Ete expressed her gratitude to the youths for coming out in large numbers for the noble cause. “Youths should be at the forefront of protests against such horrible instances of violence and atrocity,” she said, urging the parents to teach their wards about good and bad touch.
Joining the meeting, RGU Professor Nani Bath expressed resentment over the evils of caste, creed, tribe and religion in the country’s social structure. “Presence of such discrepancies in society is the main reason for violence and poor development,” he opined.
The body of the 19-year-old Dalit woman who was allegedly raped and brutally tortured by four men two weeks ago was cremated by the UP police at around 3 am on October 30 last in Hathras district.
