ITANAGAR/GUWAHATI, Oct 20: The Capital police busted a fake degree racket allegedly being operated under North East Education Institute located at Ganeshguri, a Guwahati based institute and booked its founder-director, one Nitul Thakuria, police in a statement said on Sunday.
The case came to light when one of the aggrieved students filed a complaint against the institute on March 19, 2014 alleging that large numbers of students of Arunachal Pradesh had been issued fake certificates, bogus degrees and mark sheets by Guwahati based North East Education Institute.
According to the complainant, scores of students from Arunachal Pradesh had taken admission in various courses through the North East Education Institute. However, by last part of 2017 it came to the fore that the said institution is deceiving the students and certificates issued to students are fake.
Accordingly, a case vide Itanagar PS Case No.65/2019 u/s 468/471/420 IPC on 02.03.2019 was registered and police started investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, the so-called director of the institute namely Nitul Thakuria also switched off his phone numbers and is absconding. The institute was also closed and students were wandering here and there to get the payment back and justice.
However, after registration of the case, SI N. Nishant, I/O of the case started monitoring and analyzing old records and zeroed down the location of Nitul Thakuria in Guwahati with the help of CMCU, PHQ Itanagar.
Thakurai was arrested on October 19, from Hatigaon, Guwahati area by I.O. SI N Nishant and his team & Assam Police under the close supervision of SP Capital, DySP K. Sikom, SDPO Itanagar and Inspr. M Geyi, OC PS Itanagar. He was produced before a Guwahati Court which sent him to Itanagar on 3 days transit remand.
It is also pertinent to mention here that in the last month of September a sting operation was done by a renowned national news channel in Delhi wherein one person was caught on camera claiming that he can offer qualification certificates from different universities including one leading private university of Arunachal Pradesh. While taking cognizance of the matter, a separate case has been registered by Capital Police and investigation is on, police said.
Meanwhile, police have appealed to the students, especially unemployed youth to be cautious about such racketeers, fake consultants and before taking admission to verify the authenticity of the agents and institution. ES News desk
