ITANAGAR, Sep 16:    Capital police arrested a man from Assam for duping women with fake gold statues of Jesus Christ.
This comes following a report received from one D Yadang of Pachin Colony, Naharlagun at Banderdewa Police station that she had been duped by a man called ‘Ali’ with fake gold statue of Jesus Christ.
Taking serious note of such cases of fraud and cheating SP Capital  Tumme Amo constituted a team comprising of SI R. K Jha, OC PS Banderdewa, ASI Gohain,  HC I. Basar, HC N. Tada, HC R. K Barua and HC S.K Jha under the supervision of  SDPO Naharlagun and planned to trap the accused red-handed.
Thus, the police team trapped the accused Ali with the help of the complainant. She was made to call Ali again if he had any more such statues so that she can buy more. Ali responded positively and on her request, he readily agreed to come to Banderdewa with the statue to sell it at Rs 1 00,000 this time, informed the SP.
When the accused arrived at Banderdewa on September 15 last  around 1500 hours,  police apprehended Ali whose real name is  Sariful Islam, 30, village- Sonapur, PS- Bihpuria, North Lakhimpur Assam and also recovered one more gold plated statue of Jesus Christ weighing 1.8 kg and a mobile handset.
The fraud started, on July last, when the victim  got a call  informing  her that accused (Ali)  had found a gold statue of Jesus Christ while digging a well in Itanagar and he had taken it to Laluk in Assam and kept it hidden. He then asked her to come to Laluk if she wanted to verify and buy it.
On repeated calls, she got convinced and in the last week of July, the woman went to Lakhimpur and met Ali. Both went to a village near Bangalmara, where Ali showed her the statue and gave her a small piece from that statue to check its quality. The complainant then brought the piece and got it checked by a renowned jeweller at Naharlagun, who informed her that it was a pure gold.
Convinced, the complainant bought the statue weighing 2.3 kgs for Rs. 60,000. However on examining later it was found to be made of brass and not gold.
Accused Ali was produced before the Court today and has been granted police custody for two days.
Meanwhile, SP Amo has requested citizens to be alert from such fake calls to avoid such fraud and cheating.
