ITANAGAR, Mar 19: Expressing concern over rampant earth cutting activities on the periphery of Geykar Sinyik Lake also known as Ganga Lake, some like-minded youths under the banner of ‘Save Ganga Lake’ have urged the concerned authority to take immediate measures to save the lake.
“The lake is one of the important tourist spots of the Capital Complex and people from various walks of life visit it for recreation, but its existence is in danger,” stated the Chairperson of ‘Youth Mission for Clean River-AP’ SD Loda. He alleged that the flora and fauna which exist on the periphery of the lake are now under threat due to rampant earth-cutting, adding that there is no department officially existing to manage the lake properly. While lamenting that everyone plays the blame game, Loda appealed the youths, NGOs and other social organizations to join hands in protecting the lake. A volunteer of ‘Save Ganga Lake’ Tagru Punong informed that it was during his visit here a few days earlier he noticed the rampant earth cutting activities and uploaded the photo on social media which resulted in the awakening and voluntary joining of people in the mission to save Ganga Lake.
Demanding an immediate cancelation of the LPC of those involved in earth cutting, Punong also highlighted the poor maintenance of infrastructure, littering etc as other challenges.
Meanwhile, the volunteers comprising youths, naturalists, tour operators and advocates visited the Additional District Magistrate Talo Potom seeking his intervention to protect the lake by prohibiting the earth cutting activities.
