ITANAGAR, Apr 5: Following the Supreme Court’s refusal to relax its earlier order banning liquor vends along national and state highways  on March  31 last, the capital complex administration is going to crackdown on liquor shops situated along the state and national highways from April 8 next .

Speaking to this daily, Deputy Commissioner capital complex, Prince Dhawan informed that complying with the SC ruling his office has already issued notice to concern department and authority for appropriate action. ‘We have to follow the ruling of the top court; however the court also says that the licenses which are valid till August next can be relaxed and can take their time to move shop by that time,’ he added.

District Administration of Namsai and West Siang has already sealed at least 80 shops within their respective jurisdiction last week.

The SC bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and LN Rao, said that the verdict was given keeping in mind road accidents owing to drunken driving.

The top court said that the liquor vends have to move away 500m from national highway and state highway and also should not be visible from the highways. However, the court also modified its order for areas having a population of up to 20,000 and reduced the distance norm in these areas to 220 meters.
