Addressing the media persons here at Press Club, the institute’s Chairman Chaturvedi informed that around 220 people per lakh in Arunachal Pradesh annually get affected by cancer and the most common is oral and food pipe cancer. He also added that the Northeast region is prone to cancer due to smoked meat consumption, which can be only minimized through effective awareness at the lowest levels of the society. “As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, India had 14 lakh cancer patients in 2016 and this number is expected to increase. While the incidence of new cases is around 125 per lakh per year in most parts of our country, in NE states, it is over 200,” he added. He also informed that the Max Institute will soon take up more awareness camps in the state capital and said that the it had already organized an awareness camp in HIM International School, Jollang and in Tawang and Bomdila.
Cancer can be prevented by improving awareness and bringing in healthy interventions at all levels through community participation, he added.
