YINGKIONG, Oct 12: In a significant development, Chief Minister Pema Khandu today announced to constitute a consultative committee to safeguard the rights of the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh in the wake of a possible reintroduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
Joining BJP’s Sankalp Yatra here to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Minister said that the committee will bring together all the Community Based Organisations (CBOs), civil societies and students’ unions of the state for consultation on CAB. Addressing a huge gathering, Chief Minister said it will take inputs from CBOs primarily to add the much needed ‘safeguards’ specific to the state in the proposed CAB so that there would be no dilution of the protections currently available for the state’s tribal populace under Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation Act of 1873 and Chin Hill Regulations Act, 1896. He said that the committee will also be responsible for interpreting the various provisions of CAB and add clauses for protection of the Arunachalee people. He further said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the recent NEDA meeting at Guwahati had assured that CAB will not override any provisions that have for long been protecting the rights of the tribal people of the Northeast. CM added that state government earlier requested the union government that the bill should be tabled in the parliament by adequately addressing the concerns of the indigenous people of the state.
While speaking on boosting investment in the state, Khandu announced to hold an investment summit with focus on Arunachalee entrepreneurs adding that it will aim to encourage the state’s entrepreneurs. As the next step, he said that outside entrepreneurs will also be welcomed and the state government is contemplating on a different model of investment that aims at joint investment by local as well as outside entrepreneurs. Speaking on the tourism prospect of Upper Siang, he said that Pemakod region in the district is set to attract huge number of tourists from abroad and country as it is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site and was blessed by Guru Padmasambhava in the 7th century. Health Minister Alo Libang and BJP MP Tapir Gao also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, while taking part in the Sankalp Yatra, CM visited a fish farm of a local progressive farmer and conveyed words of appreciation for optimally using the land for pisciculture, animal husbandry and rice cultivation. He also met the local BJP workers and encouraged them to strengthen the party organisation. CMO
