ITANAGAR, Nov 9: The fifth and concluding meeting of the Consultative Committee on Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was held today under the chairmanship of Home Minister Bamang Felix, who is also the Chairman of the committee here at Nokmey Namaty Hall of the Legislative Assembly Secretariat attended by MLAs.
Felix while highlighting the need of opinion sharing by all stakeholders including CBOs, students, NGOs and the people’s representatives, appealed the MLAs to give their opinions responsibly in a friendly atmosphere. The MLAs in unison expressed their apprehension that proposed amendment to the Principal Act will affect Arunachal Pradesh very badly in all spheres unless the state is kept out of its purview. Another apprehension raised was about the absence of any cut-off year in CAB which is likely to affect the demography of the state in later years. While opposing the amendment, they suggested the Consultative Committee and the state government to approach the central government to strengthen the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 and the Chin Hills Regulation 1896 by converting them into an Act before amending the Citizenship Act 1955 so that provisions of CAB do not adversely affect Arunachal.
Felix, in his remark after successful conduct of the series of meetings with the stakeholders thanked and appreciated them for expressing their views in a decent and responsible manner. He assured that all views will be incorporated in the consolidated report to be placed before government.
Commissioner Home and Political Affairs Kaling Tayeng highlighted the provisions of Citizenship Act 1955 and the proposed amendments through a Power Point Presentation.DIPR
