PASIGHAT, May 4: A blood donation camp was organised today here at Bakin Pertin General Hospital (BPGH) by The Kayi Gumín Welfare Society-Tekang (KGWST), where a total of 22 units of blood were collected.
KGWST, a registered welfare society of Tekang village has been carrying out these charitable works in East Siang district and its office-bearers said that their little effort is aimed in bringing smiles to the people who find themselves in desperate situations while in search of blood.
Praising KGWST, Medical Superintendent of BPGH, Dr YR Darang also appealed all other NGOs and societies to come forward with such voluntary blood donation works. Blood bank officers and pathologists of the hospital said that BPGH requires more than 60-70 units of blood every month on an average, and camps like this The hospital which started way back in 1912 as a small healthcare unit, is the oldest healthcare institution of Arunachal Pradesh and also the first ISO certified hospital of the state catering thousands of patients not only from the peripheral districts of central and eastern Arunachal, but also from northern Assam districts.
The state has a total of 12 blood banks as of now after the recent opening of three units last February at Seppa, Khonsa and Longding. Despite numerous voluntary blood donation camps routinely conducted by various blood donating NGOs and societies, the state still faces blood crisis, as about 5,000 units are collected annually against the requirement of about 15,000 units.
