ITANAGAR, Jul 10:

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday announced senior BJP leader cum BJP general secretary, Biyuram Waghe as its official candidate for the ensuing by-election of 12-Pakke Kessang Assembly Constituency (ST), to be held on July 29 next.

Waghe, who has been with the BJP for more than 17 years in various capacities, would be contesting the elections for the first time.

The ticket was formally handed over to Waghe today in presence of BJP state unit General Secretary, Jarpum Gamlin, Vice-President, Dominc Tadar along with other senior party workers.

Earlier, the State BJP unit had accepted the applications of all five of its members vying for the party ticket. Names of former Minister Atum Welly, veteran leader Bishnu Camdir Tok, Biyuram Waghe, former DyCM Kameng Dolo and former MLA Techi Hemu were subsequently forwarded to the Parliamentary Committee of BJP Central Office for the final decision on the party’s official candidate.

The seat had fallen vacant after former deputy chief minister and the then sitting MLA from Pakke Kessang constituency, Kameng Dolo lost the membership of the State Assembly following a Supreme Court ruling in connection with an election petition filed against him by BJP leader and former minister Atum Welly.

Accordingly, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on June 29 last had issued a notification for the by-election to 12-Pakke Kessang assembly constituency in the East Kameng district of state.

The Congress and PPA are yet to field any candidate for the by-election.
