Itanagar, Apr 19: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Arunachal Pradesh unit, held a press conference today at the State Party Headquarters in Itanagar regarding the 33% Women’s Reservation Bill tabled in Parliament, which failed to pass due to opposition from the Congress party and its alliance partners, as the Bill did not secure the required two-thirds majority.
The press conference was addressed by WCD Minister Dasanglu Pul; Mayor IMC Likha Nari Tadar; State President, BJP Mahila Morcha, Nabam Yahi Tad and Taying Shakuntala, State BJP Vice President and Convenor, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
Dasanglu Pul, strongly criticised the conduct of the opposition parties, stating that by opposing key Bills in Parliament on April 16-17, including the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill the Congress, Samajwadi Party, TMC, and DMK have betrayed half the population of the country and exposed their anti-women mindset.
She further stated that the discussions held in Parliament over these two days represented a historic opportunity to strengthen democratic participation and ensure greater representation of women in policymaking. However, the failure of the Bill reflects not just a legislative setback but also a moral failure of the opposition in the eyes of millions of women across the nation.
Condemning the opposition’s actions as undemocratic and anti-women, the BJP leaders said that these parties have consistently created obstacles whenever the issue of women’s empowerment and equal participation arises. They accused the opposition alliance of using political excuses and delay tactics to deny women their rightful place in Parliament and State Assemblies.
Highlighting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP reiterated his stance that providing women a share in policymaking is not a favour but their natural right. The party warned that those who obstructed this historic opportunity would face strong backlash from women voters in the coming elections.
The women representatives inducted into the Cabinet under the BJP-led Pema Khandu Government in the state further stated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during the parliamentary debate, exposed misinformation spread by the opposition and clarified that delimitation would not harm any state. On the contrary, it would ensure balanced and proportional representation, including protection and enhancement of representation for southern states.
Pul also criticized attempts by certain opposition parties to introduce unconstitutional demands such as religion-based reservation within the quota, terming it a deliberate tactic to delay the process and divert attention from the core objective of women’s empowerment. She emphasized that delimitation is a constitutional necessity to uphold the principle of “one person, one vote, one value,” and that any delay in its implementation directly affects the rollout of women’s reservation.
She further informed the general public that increased participation of women as lawmakers at both the Centre and State levels would directly benefit society, especially children and daughters. Reaffirming its commitment, the BJP Arunachal Pradesh stated that the party remains fully dedicated to women’s empowerment, balanced representation, and strengthening democratic institutions. It assured that the BJP will continue to fight against anti-women forces to ensure that women receive their rightful due in governance and decision-making.
