Khonsa, Jun 27: A bio-digester plant named ‘Nisurgruna’ which is built with technology developed by the prestigious Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) was installed here at Ramakrishna Sarada Mission School on June 26 last with the Tirap Community Resource Management Society under the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCORMP) organising the inauguration event.
Project Director of NERCORMP in Tirap and Longding, Ruzing Bellai informed that the 50 kg capacity plant has been installed under the newly launched Science & Technology Intervention in the NE Region (STINER) initiative of the Ministry of DoNER, Government of India with the objective of preventing pollution and provide proper waste disposal solution to biodegradable kitchen wastes, animal remains in abattoirs, hospital wastes, cow dung, sugarcane bagasse, water hyacinth etc. Principal Mataji of RK Sarada Mission praised NERCORMP for fulfilling their 47-year dream by providing the bio-digester needed for proper disposal of their kitchen wastes.
The inauguration of bio-digester plant was followed by flagging off ceremony of 8 Mahindra Bolero pickup vans by the Deputy Commissioner P.N. Thungon and Additional Deputy Commissioner Jalash Pertin for the Natural Resources Management Groups (NaRMGs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) promoted by NERCORMP in Tirap and Longding districts covering Kanubari, Lawnu, Pongchau, Longding, Dadam, Namsang and Wakka blocks. Project Director explained that objective behind providing the pickup vans is to facilitate transportation of the farm produce of NaRMGs & SHGs to the nearby markets and for collection of agricultural produce widely grown in the districts such as maize, millets, large cardamom, tea, NTFPs, arecanut etc and animal feeds including piglets and chickens for the project communities in the far flung blocks. Deputy Commissioner while suggesting proper maintenance of the vehicles exhorted to take maximum benefit of the project activities of NERCORMP in the twin districts of Tirap and Longding. Heads of Departments, NERCORMP officials and project communities were also present.
DC also launched arecanut plates made by the members Mensopo SHG of Noksa village in their unit which is supported by NERCORMP in a small scale with an objective to utilise the plant wastes into bio-degradable plates, spoons and cups which can also become a source of income and employment for SHG members of NERCORMP project villages where arecanut plantations are widely grown.
