BASAR, Jul 24:Tension gripped the otherwise placid town of Basar today as tension prevailed following the death of a village head in a road accident on Sunday. The administration has requisitioned additional police force from Aalo to control any untoward incidents. Markets across the town remained closed due to the tense situation.

Head Gaon of Bam village, Goken Bam was fatally hit by a motorcycle on Sunday evening at Bam village under Basar sub-division, West Siang district. The HGB was rushed to Community Health Centre but succumbed to his injuries shortly.

Post mortem was conducted today by team of doctors from CHC Basar and later the body was handed over to the next of kin. After receiving the dead body, the irate mob went to Police station Basar and torched the motorcycle involved in the accident. They also demanded the arrest of the employer of the three accused. Additional Deputy Commissioner and Extra Assistant Commissioner Basar immediately rushed to the spot and persuaded the mob to calm down.

The riders of the motorcycle namely Pawan Bdr Chetry, Prenanda Borah and Jyotishman Gogoi of Silapathar who were caught by villagers and later handed over to the police have been remanded to 14 days in judicial lockup.

Late Goken Bam was a prominent social worker, a vocal and good orator with huge experience in the Keba system of the Galos.
