MAHADEVPUR, Nov 27: The 48-hour bandh called by United Indigenous Peoples Forum of Lekang (UIPFL) and other unions affected normal life in Namsai district. UIPFL and other unions are demanding Permanent Residence Certificate for all those who are residing in Arunachal Territory since time immemorial.
Agitators in hundreds comprising students, youth, men and women blocked entry gate— Dirak Check gate, Mahadevpur since morning today.
Speaking to media, president UPIFL, Piyodhar Deori informed that the agitation is against the state government for its failure to confer PRC to the six communities residing in Arunachal territory especially in Lekang constituency . “Till 1991 we were provided PRC by the same government but after that they stopped issuing PRC and other related government documents to the people of Lekang. When asked about the problems in reissuing PRC, the government is blaming students unions, NGOs and All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union for objecting the cause,” stated Deori while adding that people of Lekang are indigenous people of Arunachal as they are born and brought up in the same land.
President, United Peoples Movement of Lekang, Ratan Chetia alleged that during every election, politicians assured the people of Lekang to clear the issue of PRC but till now nothing has been done. “We will not stop here, the democratic protest will go further if the government fails to respond to our demands,” he added.
As per reports, the bandh was also observed at the entry point of Santipur, Sunpura and Bordumsa. The bandh was supported by All Assam Students Union, All Moran Students Union, All Tai Ahom Students Union, etc.
