PASIGHAT, Nov 7:  An awareness campaign on ill effects of drugs, tobacco, IMFL etc with the theme ‘My Arunachal addiction free’ was conducted at IGJ Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Pasighat today which was attended by Deputy Commissioner Tamiyo Tatak, Superintendent of Police among others.

The programme started with Prof. Vasudeva Sahoo (trainer of BWSU and dean education department RGU) highlighting the spiritual and social works done by Brahmakumaris. The local partners of the programme were Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR) Pasighat and Women Against Social Evils (WASE). PBCR is a cancer research programme documenting the burden and trends of cancer in the state.

Dr Sopai Tawsik, President, Mishmi Welfare Society and Sr. Pathologist highlighted the effects of addiction in Mishmi society and also in other parts of the state. Explaining the results of PBCR data published by ICMR, he pointed out that the data reveals liver and stomach cancer rates in the state are highest in the country.

While Dr Sachin Parab, National coordinator of My India, Addiction Free India, from Mumbai enthralled the student crowd with his PowerPoint presentation on different aspects of addictions. In a very interactive session Dr Parab warned the young crowd on how addiction eats into an individual’s physical, intellectual and social health. He touched on different types of addictions like tobacco, drugs, opium including digital devices like mobile phones. 

DMO Dr M Perme threw light on the functioning of the district anti tobacco cell and the  drug de-addiction center. 

DC Tamiyo Tatak in his speech reiterated his administration’s commitment to fight against drugs for an addiction-free society. He praised the Brahmakumaris for doing commendable work in the social and spiritual realm. 

The awareness campaign was sponsored by Mishmi Welfare Society (MWS) and Brahmakumaris World Spiritual University (BWSU).
