ITANAGAR, Aug 5: After much uproar on print and social media over the demand for Mon Autonomous Region amidst the covid-19 pandemic, Chief Minister Pema Khandu today informed that his government will constitute a panel led by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, along with Cabinet Ministers, CBOs, Youth leaders and Advocates to study the case and to bring out a concrete resolution which will be beneficial for the state.
Addressing reporters, Khandu categorically clarified that the demands for Mon Autonomous Region (MAR) and Patkai Autonomous Region(PAR) are long pending demands of the people of these respective areas. Elaborating on the chronology, CM said the demand was first placed in 2003 during then Chief Minister Gegong Apang. In 2013, the then Chief Minister Nabam Tuki in his speech at Tawang Festival also assured his support for Mon Autonomous Region.
In 2003, the issues was placed in the Assembly during Short Duration Discussion raised by MLA Wanglin Lowangdong in the Seventh Session of Third Legislative Assembly. In 2005 the representatives of Tawang and West Kameng wrote to the then Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil for considering the demand of Autonomous District Council under Sixth Schedule, informed the CM.
Clarifying his presence and acceptance of Memorandum by the MARDC at Tawang recently, Khandu said ‘As the local representative, I went to Tawang to take COVID-19 updates in my constituency and I had nothing to do with the meeting of MARDC. The committee had held their meeting separately and submitted the representation to me.'
Responding to query regarding his views on the demand made by MARDC, Khandu said 'We have to honour the demands of the people for PAR and MAR. Simultaneously, we also have to respect the sentiments and views of others who are opposing the demands.'
After proper dialogue with other officials and cabinet we will very soon constitute the panel and organize the discussion with various CBOs, youths and Advocates to study the case and take a resolution that will be good for the state and its people, Khandu added.
