ITANAGAR, Oct 17: Athlete Joti Mane, who recently became the first from Arunachal Pradesh to win a gold medal in any national athletics championship was felicitated today by Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
Congratulating Mane for her stupendous feat, CM encouraged her to keep practicing and bring more laurels for herself and state. The athlete won the 5000-mtr race in the girls’ U-20 category in the 31st East Zone Junior Athletics Championship held at Ranchi last month. When informed that she clocked 19.45 minutes to win the gold, Khandu lauded the in-born talent and reiterated that raw talents are in abundance particularly in the remote districts of the state. Mane who hails from remote Monigong in the newly created district of Shi-Yomi said that there are many talented athletes in her village, who, now after witnessing her success, are eager to take to the tracks provided basic facilities are made available to them. Expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister, Mane attributed her success to her coach, M K Pegu because of whom she is availing the training facilities at Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy along with pursuing a BA degree at capital’s Dera Natung Government College. Pegu informed that Mane was spotted by a talent hunting organization when she was studying at Aalo but couldn’t attend the final selection camp at Guwahati due to her Class 12 examinations. “After her exams, I pursued with the DNGC authorities and got her admitted under sports quota so that she could train at the sports academy,” Pegu said. When asked about the training facilities at the academy, Mane said that facilities are in place but not up to level. “Here we train on a different ground but have to run on a different surface in actual competitions. It would be helpful for our athletes if similar tracks are prepared here,” she added.Mane promised that she will give her best in the ensuing 35thNational Junior Athletics Championship, 2019, scheduled to be held on November 1-2 next in Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Sports & Youth Affairs Secretary and Secretary to CM Ameya Abhayankar who visited SLSA this morning gave details of the facilities and infrastructure coming up there to the CM. He assured that the department will prepare a road map for the academy while putting in place a mechanism to track the development and training of sportspersons.
