ITANAGAR, Apr 7: Governor Brig. (Dr) B. D. Mishra (Retd.) while interacting with the senior officials of the Department of Textile and Handicrafts Industries, Khadi & Village Industries Board today at Raj Bhavan called upon the state’s agrarian community, progressive farmers, entrepreneurs and youths to explore the ways and means for harnessing the apiculture potential of Arunachal Pradesh.
Referring to the state’s vast landmass which is the largest in Northeast, the Governor said that Apiculture has a huge potential for growth and as the state government is promoting the sector, people should extensively take to honey beekeeping for economic upliftment. Beekeeping helps in employment generation, augmentation of nutritional security and sustaining biodiversity and increasing the number of bee colonies will lead to greater production of bee-related products and overall agricultural and horticultural productivity in the state, he said. While sharing his indulgence of apiculture activities in Raj Bhavan, the Governor contended that extensive beekeeping in the state will go a long way in doubling the farmers’ incomes by 2022.
Besides suggesting training programmes for the beekeepers by the state government, the Governor underscored the necessity of creating infrastructure for storage, processing and marketing of honey and honey bee products and plantation of honey bee-friendly flora at appropriate places by engaging the state’s women Self Help Groups.
He also advised the visiting officials to launch an intensive campaign for popularising beekeeping ventures in the state. PRO Raj Bhavan
