ITANAGAR, Aug 31: Arunachal Pradesh has deeply mourned the death of Pranab Mukherjee, the former President of the nation and Bharat Ratna who died in the early evening hours on Monday in the national capital at the age of 84.
Leading the state in mourning, Governor Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.) said in Pranab Mukherjee’s demise, the nation has lost a towering statesman who made immense contribution in the political field of independent India. “A scholar par excellence, Late Mukherjee who was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society will be remembered for his integrity and compassion,” his message read. On behalf of the state’s people and on his behalf, the Governor has conveyed heartfelt condolences and prayed to the Almighty for eternal peace of the departed soul.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu while expressing shock and grief over the sad demise of the former President in his condolence message said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the sad demise of former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. India has lost a legendary leader and statesman. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family and may his soul rest in peace.” Khandu remembered Late Mukherjee as a quintessential seven-time parliamentarian who started his political journey as a Rajya Sabha member in 1969 followed by four successive re-elections before winning the first Lok Sabha berth from West Bengal’s Jangipur in 2004 and also for the second time in 2009.
“Late Mukherjee was a formidable political strategist and parliamentarian with an astute legal mind. People of Arunachal Pradesh will always be indebted to him for having a soft corner for the state throughout his political career,” CM’s message added.
Mourning the former President's demise, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Pasang D. Sona in his condolence message remembered the veteran parliamentarian-statesman as “A great son of the soil whose contributions to the nation will always be remembered.”

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI): The government on Monday announced a seven-day state mourning following the death of former president Pranab Mukherjee .
In a statement, the home ministry said that as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, state mourning will be observed for seven days throughout India from August 31 to September 6, both days inclusive.
"During the period of state mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout India, where it is flown regularly, and there will be no official entertainment," the statement said.
The date, time and venue of the state funeral will be intimated later, it said.
Mukherjee passed away at Army Research and Referral Hospital here on Monday at the age of 84.
