ITANAGAR, Mar 27: Arunachal Pradesh has been rewarded by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti for its superior performance in implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), the central flagship scheme that aims to provide tap water supply to every rural household in the country by 2024.
Considering the physical progress of works, the state has been provided Rs. 90 crore as a performance incentive in the 2020-21 FY itself. During the current financial year which is nearing its end, the state has already received Rs. 254.85 crore. Arunachal Pradesh plans a 100% coverage of tap water connection in its rural areas by 2023, a year ahead of the national goal of 2024. The state has 2.17 lakh rural households, out of which as on date, 95,000 (44%) are getting tap water supply. According to a press release issued by the State JJM, in 2020-21 the state has provided 60 thousand household tap water connections against the annual target of 77 thousand. Every household in 1,509 villages in the state is now getting tap water supply.
The Northeastern states despite hilly terrain and forested areas have implemented JJM with speed and scale, the release mentioned and it is for the first time that 5 states in the region have qualified for performance incentive grants. The Ministry has kept its focus intact on the NE regarding implementation of JJM and Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has conducted a number of review meetings as well as visits to these states to expedite the implementation. The objective of giving financial incentive is to instil a sense of competition among the states to perform better and achieve the goal in a time-bound manner.
It needs mentioning that JJM is under implementation in partnership with the states since August 15, 2019 with a total outlay of Rs. 3.60 lakh crore.  So far, 3.98 crore households have been provided with tap water connections, thus increasing the tap water supply from 3.23 crore (17%) to 7.21 crore (37.6%) rural households.
