Itanagar, Oct 12: A high-level inter-state meeting to discuss issues concerning Arunachal-Assam border disputes was held today here at the Civil Secretariat between the officials of the two states headed by the respective Chief Secretaries.
Led by Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, the Arunachal Pradesh delegation comprised top officials namely Director General of Police RP Upadhyaya, Commissioner (Home) Kaling Tayeng, IGP (Law & Order) Chukhu Apa and others. The Assam team was headed by its Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar Krishna, accompanied by Addl. Chief Secretary Home & Political and Border Protection & Development Department Jishnu Barua, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and others.
Various vital issues pertaining to the frequent border disputes were discussed and deliberated. As a measure to resolve the nagging boundary disputes like encroachments, firewood and sand gravel collection, those relating to PMGSY roads, drug trafficking/smuggling, extremist movement etc., it was decided that both the states will strive for maintaining peace and status quo. It was resolved that structured district-wise committees are to be formed consisting of Deputy Commissioners, SPs and District Forest Officers of the bordering districts of both states to address the disputes. It was agreed upon that regular meetings will be held between the counterparts and for dealing with any dispute, the other side will be taken into confidence with the aim of arriving at a peaceful resolution. The officials also agreed to address the issue of cases pending against government officials relating to border disputes at the earliest.
Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar reiterated Arunachal’s commitment to maintain peace and tranquillity along the border with Assam. Acknowledging the importance of the CBOs in solving border problems, it was also agreed that they will also be consulted and engaged in resolving disputes. To develop and sustain the spirit of brotherhood and bonhomie, it was decided that games, sports and cultural exchanges will be conducted between the people of the two states. Both the states agreed to maintain peace at any cost along the border so that unwanted elements who take advantage of the border disputes are controlled. It was unanimously agreed that a humanitarian approach will be taken in solving the border problems and Inter-State Coordination meetings will be convened on a regular basis.
DCs of Lower Siang, Lower Dibang Valley and Papum Pare A.K. Singh, Mitali Namchoom and Pige Ligu respectively, SP Papum Pare J. Chiram, SP (SB) John Pada, Director Border Affairs Hage Lailang and Joint Director Border Affairs Nighe Bengia were part of the state team of officials. PRO CS
